Maui Horseback Riding Vacation Kaanapali Beach, Maui
General Info
Horseback riding Maui - three different horseback riding adventures and the comfort and fun of a Hawaii resort. Specially created and only available through EquitrekkingTravel.com.
Horseback ride at a working ranch, ride into the dramatic crater of Haleakala's volcano and take in a West Maui sunset from the saddle. This special Equitrekking Travel Maui Equestrian Vacation includes four nights hotel and breakfast daily at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, a car rental for entire stay, and all taxes except on the car.
The Healeakala Crater Horse Ride is reason enough to travel to Maui. Where else can you ride a horse into the crater of a volcano? This four hour ride takes travelers on horseback down the Sliding Sands Trail to the Crater floor. You descend over 2500 ft., listening to volcanic cinders crunch beneath your horse's hooves as you pass by the rare Haleakala Silversword, dramatic cinder cones and awe-inspiring views of this colorful volcano. This ride takes you into one of America's great National Parks-- Haleakala National Park. At the crater floor, you'll enjoy a well deserved picnic lunch with tasty croissant sandwiches. The round trip is 7.5 miles and takes around 4 hours. Prior riding experience is a must for this ride. You'll be traveling from about 9,870 feet to around 7,500 feet, so if you have issues with changes in elevations, this is not the ride for you. Consider substituting the Kipahulu Old Hawaii Ride instead of this riding day. Contact us, we help you with these arrangements. The Kipahulu Old Hawaii Ride takes riders into the other side of Haleakala National Park, a lush area of rainforests with native Hawaiian guides.
Piiholo Ranch is a working ranch located on the edge of a rainforest, 2,000 feet above the bright, beautiful blue Pacific Ocean in Maui's Upcountry. Riding at the ranch is diverse. There are lots of wide open ranges for faster riding and panoramic views of the open range where cows graze and the bright blue Pacific, as well as Eucalyptus Forest, Koa, and Ohi`a trees, and green Kikuyu and Pangola pastures. This 3-hour ride explores the ranch at a faster pace, trotting through pastures, cantering along Koa Ridge and to breathtaking views up on Piiholo Hill. Then, enjoy lunch at the ranch. This is an advanced ride but can be catered to beginners as a walking ride.
Piiholo Ranch works to preserve the environment, including serving as a safe haven for the endangered Nene, Hawaii’s State Bird. This goose is named after the soft nay-nay sound that it makes when it eats. Riding here, you may hear about paniolo culture in the Upcountry. Paniolo’s are Hawaiian Cowboys, who learned their ways of working cattle from the Mexican cowboys called Vaqueros. It's a culture unique to the Hawaiian Islands.
In the West Maui Mountains, enjoy the romance and beauty of a Maui sunset from on horseback. This two-hour evening ride is appropriate for all levels of riders. You may ride over lush pineapple fields, through tropical valleys and ironwood forests, and enjoy panoramic views of Maui and the neighbor islands, as guides recount the history-rich Hawaiian valleys and ancient home sites.

Packing
Packing for Horseback Riding Maui
Please see Equitrekking Travel's General Packing Suggestions.
Long pants and covered shoes are recommended for all of these rides. You'll want to pack rain gear, as many of the areas where you'll ride are tropical and wet with changing weather.
For the Crater Ride, make sure to wear sunscreen and pack layers. The 10,000 foot summit is around 30 degrees cooler than at sea level. So while it may be 85 degrees at your resort area by Lahaina, it can be 55 degrees on top of Haleakala Crater. The day will warm slightly as you ride to the crater floor with less breezy conditions, so layers that you can remove easily are suggested.
We can't guarantee helmets for each place, so if you'd like to wear a helmet, please bring your own.
About the Horses
You'll ride Quarter hoses and other mixed breeds on this Maui riding vacation. Each destination you visit has fit horses who have adapted to the climate and terrain, making it easier for you to explore and enjoy the views. You'll really appreciate how in shape your horses are for the Haleakala Crater Ride, as your horse takes you down the Sliding Sands Trail to the crater floor.
On your sunset ride, you'll enjoy the celebrity horses, like Kurt Russell and Janet Jackson. The ranch has a bit of fun with the horse's names. It's fun for the rider to see who they end up with on this beautiful West Maui ride.
Activities/Events
Besides the diverse horseback riding, riders and non-riders may enjoy relaxing at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel, set amid colorful, tropical gardens and decorated in a traditional Hawaiian style. Activities and attractions at the resort include two restaurants, spa and salon and large swimming pool, as well as complimentary Hawaiian activities.
The Kaanapali Beach Resort Area includes 1,200 acres with two championship golf courses, private homes, five condominiums, several restaurants, the Whaler's Village Shopping Center and Museum, and six hotels.
A short drive from your resort (three miles south) is Lahaina Town, a lively port that is one of Maui's top attractions. Lahaina, once the royal capitol of the Hawaiian kingdom, still exudes a special charm that contributes to its rich heritage and has many shops and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.

Day 1
Arrive to Maui. If you wish, Equitrekking Travel's preferred provider of travel services can arrange your flights.
Day 2
Maui Ranch Ride: Ride horses at Piiholo Ranch, located near the cowboy town of Makawao in Maui's Upcountry, an area well known for its cowboy culture.
Check-in at 9:30am, ride from 10:00am-1:00pm. Drive time from Kaanapali Beach hotels to Piiholo ranch is 36.8 miles or about 1 hour and 5 mins.
Rides at Piiholo go out in small groups limited to six people, so you are ensured a personalized adventure. You will have plenty of opportunities to talk with your guide and group and learn about life in Maui's Upcountry.
Piiholo Ranch is located on the edge of a rainforest, 2,000 feet above the bright, beautiful blue Pacific Ocean. Riding at the ranch is diverse. There are lots of wide open ranges for faster riding and panoramic views, as well as Eucalyptus Forest, Koa, and Ohi`a trees, and green Kikuyu and Pangola pastures. Piiholo Ranch works to preserve the environment, including serving as a safe haven for the endangered Nene, Hawaii’s State Bird. This goose is named after the soft nay-nay sound that it makes when it eats. Piiholo Ranch is a working cattle ranch. Riding here, you may hear about paniolo culture in the Upcountry. Paniolo’s are Hawaiian Cowboys, who learned their way of working cattle from the Mexican cowboys called Vaqueros. It's a culture unique to the Hawaiian islands.
You may wish to pack rain gear for this ride, as the weather changes quickly in the Upcountry. You may ride along and have rain one minute and then the next, you'll be drying under bright sun and blue skies, as the ranch is on the edge of a rainforest. In the event of extreme weather, the ride will be canceled or rescheduled. If it is misty or lightly sprinkling, the ride will go out (remember, the ranch is on the edge of a rainforest). Variable weather lends itself to incredible textures of the landscape with the ever-changing light, mist, shadows and usually brilliant blue skies. This experience will lift your spirits.
You may wish to spend the afternoon exploring nearby Makawao, a cowboy town in the Upcountry where real Hawaiian cowboys still reside.
Day 3
Haleakala Crater Horse Ride: Check in time is 8:30am at the ranch office, where you'll fill out some paperwork. Please leave at 7:15 AM from your resort area to arrive on time for this ride. This four hour volcano ride includes lunch on the trail.
Heleakala Crater on Maui is a horseback ride that will earn you bragging rights. Where else can you ride horses into the crater of a volcano? You'll descend down the Sliding Sands Trail to the Crater floor 2500 ft., listening to volcanic cinders crunch beneath your horse's hooves as you pass by the rare Healakala Silversword, dramatic cinder cones and awe-inspiring views of this colorful volcano. You'll be riding horses in one of America's great National Parks-- Healakala National Park.
Doug Smith, the owner of Pony Express Tours, has been leading riders into Haelakala for 25 years, so he knows a thing or two about this dynamic system. At the crater floor, you'll enjoy a well deserved picnic lunch is with tasty croissant sandwiches. Julie can help you with these arrangements.
Day 4
You'll have most of the day free to explore your resort and the many activities in the area or the beach town of Lahaina with its fun shops and restaurants.
Enjoy a beautiful Maui sunset from on horseback in the West Maui Mountains. This two-hour evening ride is appropriate for all levels of riders. Check in is usually around 4pm and you'll depart around 4:45, returning to the stables after two hours of riding. The times vary a bit, so you can make sure to be out for a nice sunset. You may ride over lush pineapple fields, through tropical valleys and ironwood forests, and enjoy panoramic views of Maui and the neighbor islands, as guides recount the history-rich Hawaiian valleys and ancient home sites.
Day 5
Depart or extend your stay with a ride in Kipahulu, one of the most remote areas of Maui. For more information on this trip and extending your stay on Maui or pairing this vacation with an equestrian vacation on Hawaii's Big Island, please contact us.

A beautiful afternoon, horses, and an up and coming sunset on Maui couldn't make for a better day ending! On Maui's West side, two miles above the town of Napili, is Ironwood Ranch a beautiful trail ride facility located less than 10 minutes from most hotels and condos on the very popular West End of Maui. If you're looking for a trail ride close to your resort, this is the ride to enjoy! We rode through beautiful tropical landscapes and organic pineapple groves. Those views were incredible. As we came out of the valley, we saw the West Maui Mountain Range on one side. It was covered by a beautiful rainbow. On the other side-- the coast! It was breath taking. I was loving it! Being a rider myself for many years, I would recommend this hidden gem.

Excerpt from letter to Equitrekking Travel with review of Maui Equestrian Vacation.
The sunset ride at Ironwood Ranch was also phenomenal! If you send anyone to ride there you need to strongly encourage them to do the sunset ride! The ride itself was beautiful, the scenery was beyond description and then as we finished up we sat on the horses on the side of a hill overlooking the ocean and watched the sun set into the ocean. It was beautiful. Gina was my guide and she was great as well- very knowledgeable and talkative, she speaks japanese btw and we talked the whole trip! Oh, my horses name was Ben Affleck and Gina rode Brad Pitt- how can you complain about that??
The Piholo Ranch ride- absolutely amazing! The ranch itself is very clean, new and impressively built, so it was great just to wander around and look at stuff. The scenery, again was simply awe inspiring. I actually got a private ride and I loved my guide- we had so much in common and we talked non stop! We had lunch (a huge lunch of scrumptious food) at a beautiful site, on the side of a mountain where they had just built a a few cabins with an outdoor dining table set up. We also rode through an area where they were rounding up cattle and under/around the zip lines they also own. It was just a perfect ride, and everyone from the company that I came across was genuinely friendly. They were also very friendly to my mom and grandmother when they picked me up.
The Haleakala Crater ride... I can simply say I’m glad I did it, and not sure I would choose to do it again! The scenery was incredible, the guide Ra was incredible, the horse was incredible, the food was great. But it was a very long ride and I was glad when we were done! I don’t remember being that tired or that sore- ever! It was dusty and slow (not complaining- it needed to be!). I guess this is the trip that I have the most difficulty describing- it was SO worth it and I’m very glad I went, but when I think back on it I think “beautiful, tired, sore!” Does that make sense? I would absolutely recommend it to everyone, just take Aleve before you head out, and have some waiting when you get back!
The Kipahulu ride at Maui Stables- WOW! I had a blast. The guides were interesting, friendly and fun. The scenery was beautiful, and the ride was great- a challenge for the horses which I was respectful of, but the other newbies on the ride had no idea how skilled their horses were! The terrain was steep and mostly rock, and it was wet so I kept waiting for a slide, or stumble which never came! The horses were wonderfully trained which we spent a great deal of time discussing! I’m going to buy my next horse from them! He buys problem horses from meat auctions and then trains them in the ocean! This was the trip that was going to cancel up until the evening before, and I was so tired by then I was hoping it would cancel. I’m SO glad it didn’t! It was a perfect ride, the stables were beautiful, the drive in was beautiful, and if you send anyone- tell them to be sure and use the Maui Stable bathrooms- they are GORGEOUS!...
