Kenya Horse Safari Kenya
General Info
Kenya Horse Safari with one of Africa's top mobile riding safari companies.
With over 25 years of experience organizing riding safaris throughout Kenya, there are few companies that have guides with this level of knowledge and experience. One of the key factors of any safari in Africa, but in particular a riding safari, is your guide.
Tristan Voorspuy has led safaris in Africa since the early 1980's, so it is no surprise that he has been recognized as one of the top safari guides in Africa. His knowledge of Africa and its wildlife has led to him being chosen as one Kenya's honorary Game Wardens. Tristan has a deep understanding of the interaction between wildlife and man on horseback. After a glorious day on safari and around a bush fire at night there are few better storytellers in Africa.
Tristan's wife Cindy Voorspuy is one of Africa's top ranked women polo players. There isn't much she doesn't know about rearing, stabling, managing and riding horses in Kenya. At Deloraine, she looks after over 80 horses in stables and paddocks around the farm, preparing them for Offbeat's mobile riding safaris. Guests staying at Deloraine are always made to feel 'at home' by Cindy and her family.
There are several different riding safari options to choose from while vacationing with on this Kenya Horse Safari. 7 night to 10 night horseback safaris are available, as well as custom safari tours designed to fit your needs.

Packing
Packing for African Horse Safaris
Being so close to the equator, there is no winter or summer in Kenya, so you can enjoy this vacation year round. There are two rainy seasons, one in November and then again beginning in April. The hottest months are February/March, September/October. The rides are at an average of 5,500 feet. This makes for a cool climate and also means there are very few mosquitoes. Below are some recommendations, and please visit Equitrekking Travel's packing list for other suggestions.
It is suggested that you wear a riding helmet, and you must provide your own.
Suggested Packing List:
- Soft Gloves
- Sun Hat
- Helmet (bring your own)
- Pocket knife
- Bottle Opener
- Waterproof Poncho
- Riding boots
- Binoculars
- Warm Jersey
- Jeans and riding pants
- Shorts and T-shirts
- Evening wear (optional)
- Malaria Pills
- Chaps or Half Chaps
- Sun Block
- Water Bottle
- Mosquito Repellent
- Camera and Film
- Money Belt
- Sun Glasses
- Light Weight Jacket
- Gym Shoes/ Flip-flops
- Long Sleeved Cotton Shirt x 4
- Swim suit
Laundry will be done on non-moving days, therefore luggage should be kept to a minimum.
Internal flights have a weight allowance of maximum 15 kgs or 33 lbs, inclusive of hand luggage. A soft bag is preferable on this safari.
About the Horses
The horses are well-schooled Thoroughbred and Thoroughbred crosses for this Kenya horse safari. Many are home bred from a selection of the stables' best mares. All of them are responsive, tough and fit. Many are trained for polo and the best ones are handpicked for each guest on their riding safari. Over the duration of a full riding safari, guests often become highly attached to their own personal mounts.
Terrain
Most of the rides in Masai land and the Northern ranches are on fairly open plains (black cotton soil) interspersed with bush. They are short grass plains ideal for riding. Care must be taken for holes but canters and gallops are taken on open plains. The riding safaris always have Land Rovers along for game drives.
Tack
English tack is used as well as a variety of various saddles from polo, Wintec, French Trekking and Australian stock.
Activities/Events
There are no lack of activities on these horseback safaris! Various activities are available at each of the different camps.
Meru Camp
Activities include day and evening game drives, bush breakfasts and sundowners, evening walks with armed guards, fishing in the local rivers and visits to the local Boran community. This area of Kenya gets quite hot during the dry season. After an active morning in the bush, there's no better feeling than coming back to camp and cooling off in the stunning infinity swimming pool and watching the wildlife as it comes to drink from the Bisanadi River below you.
Sosian
Sosian has an expanding herd of 600 + head of Boran cattle (Kenya’s very own zebu breed developed from the native stock) including a pedigree breeding herd and a small dairy. A tour of the ranching side of Sosian is another fascinating activity not to be missed. Guests can lend a hand with dipping, weighing and vaccinating and learn about the trials of keeping unfenced cattle in this wild environment full of large predators. Sosian is well known for its delicious home cooking using fresh ingredients from the garden and its warm and friendly hospitality. There are lots of wonderful places to eat including picnics by the river, lunches by the swimming pool and bush dinners around an open fire followed by camping under the stars for the more adventurous.
Deloraine
There is a lovely swimming pool, croquet lawn and tennis court. Birding can be spectacular, and 2-4 day stays are the norm. Half and full day safari’s to the lakes with a picnic are a usual feature and simply relaxing by the pool in the stunning formal gardens is extremely rewarding.
Mara Camp
The Masai Mara plays host to the annual migration from July to October. An enormous concentration of wildebeest, zebra and consequently predators pass through the surrounding plains. Unrestricted by National Park rules, guests at Mara Camp can enjoy full day game drives as well as evening drives (pre-dinner) in custom-built Land Cruisers, bush breakfasts, picnics and the famous Kenyan sundowner. Visits to the wildebeest crossing points on the Mara River, Maasai village visits, trips to the rhino sanctuary, scenic flights, and hot air balloon safaris can all be enjoyed from Mara Camp. Guests can relax in the bar and 'mess' tent, furnished with comfortable sofas, a writing desk and library with wildlife guide books. Mara Camp works closely with the local Maasai community. Local Maasai helped build the camp with Piers Winkworth, the owner. Many of them are now working in the camp’s staff.
Game
Game is plentiful everywhere that the riding safaris are conducted. The rides are through habitats where dangerous game abounds but your guide is knowledgeable of their habits and likely reactions of the game. In any situation, you should do as he or she says. Game drives, night game drives, and game walks are undertaken on every safari whether riding or not.
Accommodations/Food
The mobile tented camps are spacious 10 ft x 9 ft sleeping tents with camp beds (doubles on request). Mattresses, sheets, and blankets are provided along with towels, soap, and flashlights. There are gas lamps and hurricane lamps in each tent. A lavatory tent is provided for each double tent and showers are always available.
Meru Camp
The Meru Camp is a small tented camp located on the edge of Meru National Park in the Bisanadi National Reserve. It sleeps up to twelve people, and offers a highly personal safari experience. Meru is one of Kenya's remotest, yet finest National Parks.
Sosian
Sosian is an old private game ranch located on the Laikipia Plateau, an area well known for its abundant wildlife and strong ranching traditions. Originally built in the 1940s by Italian artisans, the old ranch house has been beautifully renovated into a comfortable lodge.
Deloraine
Deloraine was built by Lord Francis Scott in 1920, a prominent early settler instrumental in developing farms in Kenya. Set in the middle of a 3500 acre farm, it is one of the finest examples of colonial architecture in the country. Your time here will reflect the elegant lifestyle of a bygone era.
Mara Camp
The world famous Masai Mara National Reserve is epitomized by the annual wildebeest and zebra migration. Mara Camp is a seasonal tented safari camp located on the Olare Orok River in the Mara North Conservancy. This small and exclusive six tented camp offers a truly traditional safari experience.
Food and Drinks
Picnic lunches are carried in saddle bags on moving days. All of the food is fresh. Dry ice and cubes are brought along to ensure that the group is self sufficient for one week. Bread is baked daily on open fires and the chefs are extremely skilled. You will be pleasantly surprised at the service.
All wine, beer, spirits, and sodas are included in the price. Champagne is only provided on demand and an additional cost. It is recommended that you make full use of the Duty Free allowance for any special liquors, whisky or brandy that you may wish to have during your trip.
The Ideal Traveler
These equestrian vacations are for intermediate to advanced riders only. You should be comfortable at all paces and able to gallop out of trouble. The horseback safaris are through big game country. You should be fit enough to ride between 4 and 6 hours a day. Some walking may be necessary over rough terrain. Children are welcome but must also be accomplished riders.
Non-Riders are welcome but please contact us for more information. There are often days on the safari which will suit the non-riders better than others. The full set of departure trips are not recommended for non-riders.Tailor made trips are available on request and best if traveling with non-riders.
Land Rover safaris are also available during your trip. This outfitter strongly encourages walking that is conducted with an armed guide.
