Ecuador Horseback Riding - Volcanoes and Haciendas Ecuador
General Info
Horseback riding Ecuador! Visit colonial haciendas, ride the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", round up horses and cattle and get to know the culture.
Located just south of Quito, (the capital of Ecuador), close to the village of Aloag, the Hacienda La Alegria is ideally situated on the lower slopes of Corazon Volcano in the heart of the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", a spectacular valley dividing the eastern and western ranges of the Andes. From the garden of the hacienda you can enjoy breathtaking views across the valley to the extinct volcanos of Ruminahui, Pasochoa and Atacazo, and in the distance the mighty cone of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world.
Your host Gabriel comes from a long line of horsemen. His grandfather bred race horses close to Quito, while his father, Renato Espinosa was a keen polo player. Gabriel followed in the same footsteps as a young man, horse-jumping and playing competitive polo. Gabriel and his wife Paty have three daughters, who are all enthusiastic equestrians, and the whole family's love of horses is reflected in the quality of the horses at the farm.
Hacienda La Alegria is situated in the verdant Machachi Valley to the south of Quito. Surrounded by eleven volcanoes, in a region often referred to as “The Volcano Avenue”. There are rides with fixed itineraries, which allow you to meet other like-minded travelers and enjoy the experience of a lifetime in great company. For groups of two or more, customized rides can be arranged.
Volcano and Haciendas Ride
Experience the beauty of the Ecuadorian Andes horseback riding in Ecuador. Friendly chagras, (Ecuadorian cowboys and horsemen of the Andes), usually pause from their work to greet you, exchange news, or even to offer a drink as they wish you luck on your travels. This ride incorporates visits to the Corazon, Ruminahui, Quilindaña, and Chalupas volcanoes, and, of course, you will see the majestic Cotopaxi volcano from many different angles throughout our journey. Each morning brings new experiences and a chance to contemplate the beauty of the mountains and valleys. This trip will give you a taste of the wild pampas of Ecuador.
This ride includes visits to dozens of haciendas. Eight nights will be spent in haciendas. One night will be spent in the refuge on Cotopaxi. Explore and experience the grandeur of the Andes, marveling at the diversity of flora, fauna and landscapes. The only form of transportation during your nine-day trek will be your horse-- your partner throughout this adventure.
From the base at the beautiful old Hacienda, set out with small groups of riders across the paramo (high grasslands), mountains and cloud forest of the high equatorial Andes, staying at haciendas and "tambos" (traditional Andean inns). Cross extensive properties, some with more than 40,000 acres, on sturdy and well trained horses climbing to altitudes exceeding 12,000 feet (4200m) and ride down to hidden valleys like Pedregal, Limpiopungo, Yanachiza, Chalupas, Guagui and Secas to experience the exhilaration of full gallops at high altitudes. It is in these valleys where men, shaped by the land, together with their horses, have tamed the wild bulls and produced the culture of the paramo, a world apart. Long after returning to the Hacienda and the end of the journey, memories of this rugged but beautiful world will linger as a once in a lifetime adventure.
Cattle Round Up Horse Drive and Colonial Haciendas
This extraordinary ride will introduce you to a side of Ecuador that few Ecuadorians, let alone visitors, ever see. You will participate in a traditional "rodeo", literally "round-up", of fighting bulls in the remote Cordillera Oriental of the Andes. This is not a spectacle organized for the benefit of tourists, but a time-honored annual event in the calendar of a working ranch. You will ride with real chagras (Andean cowboys) whose life and work has changed little for generations. The spectacle of chagras at work, resplendent in their traditional ponchos and llama or goat hair chaps and intricately carved wooden bucket stirrups, will leave you with life-long memories of the "real Ecuador".
Collect the cattle in the wild, isolated grazing areas of the “paramo” (moorlands) at over 3500 meters high. This area is where the Chagras horsemen of the Andes live. They have learned thier way of working cattle from their fathers and their fathers before them. They still use their hroses and lassos to collect livestock. This activity is full of adrenaline and history. To reach these hidden paramos, travel through the eastern mountains for two long riding days and meet the "chagras " to start the round up. After two days of work on the Hacienda Chalupas, return by rounding the highest active volcano in the world, Cotopaxi, and discovering some of its secrets.
Chargras Parade and Around Cotopaxi Ride
This riding tour includes haciendas, green valleys, mountain slopes, volcanoes, a visit to the capital of the chagras and participation in a parade with around 2000 chagras. See lassoing and learn more about chagra culture. Transfer to Quito after your journey to end your trip with a city tour, a visit to a craft market, the old city, churches, and lunch and dinner in town.
Packing
Packing Tips for Horseback Riding in Ecuador
Please see Equitrekking Travel’s General Packing List.

A warm sleeping bag is essential for some rides. With advance notice, sleeping bags can be provided.
This supplier can do laundry for guests or they can do it. There is a washer and dryer available at some points during the trip. There is no cost for this.
About the Horses
Most of the horses have been bred on the family farm and include mixed Criollo (native South American), English Thoroughbred and Arabian stock, resulting in a near perfect combination of toughness, agility, calm temperament and "mountain sense". Beginners and experienced riders alike have found them easy to ride, willing and good mannered. If you have previous riding experience you will be given plenty of opportunity to canter.
There is a range of tack including Western style, English style, Mclellan calvary, Chillean and traditional Ecuadorian "Chagra" style, with its intricate leather-work and saddle horn.
Special note on Gaited breeds: Ecuador's gaited horses are called Paso Caminero. These horses are very good to cover long distances. Also, this horse is very elegant and Ecuadorean horsman use them to go to the city, quite a sight to see!
Activities/Events
Ecuador's Volcanoes and Haciendas Riding Vacation is dedicated to low impact tourism. A variety of activities are available for those interested in the ecology of this immensely bio-diverse region.
Hiking
The hacienda is situated on the lower slopes of Volcan Corazon in the heart of the "Avenue of the Volcanoes", a spectacular valley dividing the eastern and western ranges of the Andes, ideally located for a hiking trip into the mountains. Accredited mountain guides can be arranged for a tour if required, and can supply maps and directions for local peaks: Viudita (3760m), Corazon (4788m), Ruminahui (4712m) and Pasochoa (4250m).
Viudita is a three hour round trip and is ideal for a morning or afternoon acclimatization hike. Corazon is a long day hike from the farm for fit and acclimatized hikers. Because the physical distances between the mountains are much greater than in the European Alps or the Rockies, you might like to consider the option of combining hiking and riding. Ride to Corazon, Ruminahui and Pasochoa, taking the horses up onto the paramo (high grassland) from where spectacular hiking is possible with the option of returning to the hacienda for a hot shower at the end of the day. Ascents of Illiniza Sur (5263m) and the classic cone of Cotopaxi (at 5897m the highest active volcano in the world) offer the possibility of some adventurous riding combined with more serious mixed terrain climbing. Previous mountaineering experience is not necessary, but acclimatization on the smaller peaks is suggested.
Mountain Biking
From the Hacienda there are a number of options for mountain bikers. For those looking for downhill thrills, descents of Viudita and the lower slopes of Corazon and - for the ultimate adrenaline rush - Cotopaxi are possible. The countryside surrounding the hacienda is interlaced with cobbled roads lined with ancient eucalyptus trees, giving a timeless feel to trips through the local villages and farms. On these roads you are more likely to encounter horseback traffic than motor vehicles. Bike rentals can be arranged or you are welcome to bring your own (transfers from/to Quito can be arranged with a pickup truck).
Cloud forest
A unique feature of the environment around the Hacienda is the endangered habitat of the Ecuadorian cloud forest. These subtropical mountain rain forests used to cloak much of the steep western slopes of the Andes between 1,000 and 2,500 meters, but are now classified as threatened. Ecuador's Volcanoes and Haciendas Ride is extremely fortunate to have an area of unspoiled primary forest close. These luxuriant forests rank among some of the most bio-diverse habitats on the planet, with an astonishingly profusion of plant life, including orchids, epiphytes ("air plants"), tree ferns, bamboo, wax palms, podocarpus and aliso. Bird-watching is popular; with hummingbirds, nightjars, and other exotic species present in the forest (Ecuador boasts more bird species than any other country). Be driven to the edge of the forest slopes and hike from there, or ride through the forest on horseback (within easy reach with a day's ride).
Agro-tourism and volunteer work
The Hacienda is a working dairy farm and visitors are invited to tour the farm (and participate at milking time if they wish!) The Hacienda staff is also interested in taking on volunteers looking for work experience with the horses or teaching English and promoting sustainable ecology at nearby village schools.
Summer camps
The Hacienda also runs a program of fun, educational summer camps for school age children. The camp offers children the opportunity to have an unforgettable, healthy, character building holiday in the mountains. Activities include hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding lessons, horse care, camping and excursions to the surrounding mountains and cloud forest and local sites of interest. There is an educational focus to the camps, with a strong emphasis on ecology and conservation.
Chagras
See rodeos and round-ups where "Chagras" (Andean cowboys) are dressed in traditional llama-hide chaps and see even participate and help muster the cattle from the surrounding paramo. See Cattle Round Up Horse Drive and Colonial Haciendas Ride.
Accommodations/Food
Accommodations
The Hacienda is a family-run organic farm and the hospitality of the Espinosa household is remarked upon by visors who return year after year. You will be welcomed with a roaring log fire in the sitting room, and in your bedroom when the nights are cold. While being hosted by the Espinosas in their family home, enjoy the Hacienda, full of fascinating equestrian heirlooms, including antique side-saddles, cattle brands and traditional "Chagra" (Andean cowboy) tack.
The Hacienda can accommodate up to 24 people both in the farmhouse and a recently completed extension. The extension has been tastefully restored with solid cypress floors and beams and modern en-suite bathrooms with plenty of hot water and powerful showers. There are also split-level family rooms which sleep five in comfort.
Meals
The family and staff provide full board including all meals that are tailored for hungry travelers, riders and hikers, and combine delicious Ecuadorian and international cuisine. Breakfast includes coffee, tea, cocoa, oatmeal, eggs and/or French toast, natural fruit juice, and fruit of the season. Dinners are typically Ecuadorian soup, chicken, beef, pork or pasta, vegetables, rice or potatoes, and dessert. Lunches on trail days are high energy including sandwiches and fruit. Hacienda days include meals similar to dinner. Vegetarian/other special dietary options on request.
The Ideal Traveler
There are horses suitable for both first-time and experienced riders. All riders are carefully matched with a horse to fit their level of riding and experience. Before setting off, you will be given time to get used to your horse and tack in the safety of the hacienda's paddock and "round”. You will ride well-behaved, willing and fit horses and will be fed and accommodated in style. Whether you are a total beginner or an experienced rider, you will be introduced to a side of Ecuador that few on the "tourist trail" get to see.
Ecuador's Volcanoes and Haciendas horseback riding tours offer a quality riding experience. The hacienda is surrounded by fabulous riding country, with cobbled tracks winding through lush farmland up to the rolling paramo (high grassland) and the rocky summit cones of the many extinct volcanoes that line both sides of the Machachi valley.
Please note that the Cattle Round Up Horse Drive and Colonial Haciendas is recommended for Experienced Riders only.

Transfer to the Hacienda La Alegria, lunch, afternoon activities, dinner in a cozy dinning room with fire place and night at the hacienda. Night at Hacienda La Alegria. The Hacienda de Alegria is a family-run organic farm owned by the Espinosas. Visitors return year after year to this beautiful, traditional home. Night in a mountain refuge.
Day 5
Breakfast. The challenge of the day will be to cover the northern base of Cotopaxi, heading east on a long journey that ends in the plains of the volcano Quilindaña. This valley was part of an old volcano, Hacienda Chalupas, the destination for the two day “rodeo” is based here. Chagras from the haciendas of the area come to participate in the rodeo. Enjoy dinner and tonight at Hacienda Chalupas.
Day 6
After breakfast, get ready for a exciting day of work. It starts with the chagras meeting together on horseback with their ponchos and warm fur chaps, forming a semicircle, where the chagra rodeo chief gives instructions for the day. It's very similar a military strategy. Several groups of chagras will fan out up the mountain to cover the largest possible area. This will take around 5 hours. Gradually the first group of cattle appears. Some try to return to their hideouts in the mountains and now is when the strategy requires help from all the riders. You'll yell and canter around on your horse, cutting the livestock out and driving them to the hacienda corrals. Lunch in the afternoon and then reach the corrals where chagras do unique "work" with the cattle.
They will lasso them and take them to the post to mark and deworm them before they can be released to the rest of the group. At the end of the day ,chagras get together to sing. Women horses and bulls are the main subject. They drink their typical sugar cane liquor and dance. It's definitely a locals scene. Being here will enable you to immerse yourself in the culture and understand their lifestyle. Enjoy a warm fireplace and dinner to recover your energy for the next days journey. Night at Hacienda Chalupas
Day 7
Today drive wild horses from the hacienda and take them to the corral. The horses introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century remain vital to cowboys in these remote areas. The aim is to cut the horses hooves and deworm them. The hoof trimming is important because in these vast prairies, they don't get worn down enough on their own. The cowboys need to cut them to keep them healthy. The deworming reduces the burden of parasites, decreasing the risk of disease and allowing them to get the nutrients from the pastures. Tonight, you have the opportunity to fish for trout for dinner. Night at Hacienda Chalupas.
Day 8
Leave the mountain and head west on long trails of large wilderness areas with pine trees. Continue along the warmer valley and stop for lunch. See the giant volcano Cotopaxi from the south side. At the end of the afternoon, arrive to Hacienda La Cienega, built in 1570 and now a luxury hotel. Rest after a long journey. Option for a relaxing massage at the hotel. Dinner and night at Hacienda La Cienega.
Day 9
Today the direction is north through the valley of Cotopaxi to the Valley of Machachi. The views of the volcano are stunning. Late in the afternoon, arrive to Hacienda La Alegria where a delicious meal will be waiting for you to celebrate this wonderful riding experience. Night at Hacienda la Alegria
Day 10
Transfer to the airport or contact us, about extending your stay. You may wish to have one extra day and night at Hacienda La Alegria.
* This itinerary is simply a sample itinerary and flexible. It is subject to change based on the weather and trip guide's discretion.

Traveler Reviews
We spend two glorious days at the Hacienda, our host Gabriel and Patty could not have made us more welcome or make our stay more perfect. The horseback riding is spectacular and the horses and equipment are first class. We plan to return to this little paradise again as soon as possible, but not just for 2 days, but for a few weeks at least.

Thank you so so so much for a truly amazing unforgettable inspiring time!! I loved our rides, Corazon, Ruminahui, Cotopaxi... the last day was incredible, felt like a cowboy cantering through Machachi at the end of the day. Got so used to the routine of getting up and spending all day on the horse so missing riding already...and respect Cocoon and Kafu ever so much more after. Please tell your wife that I absolutely loved the food and really wish I could get some recipes. Loved the Andean grain soup Quinoa (?!),the humitas or not sure what maize meal we had the last night and of course Colada Murada. Anyway as soon as I return to SA I will visit my grandmother and make Colada Murada with her for him! Also got a special rock from Cotopaxi. You've got an excellent thing going - really very inspiring. Greetings from San Cristobal Excited to be here and start exploring the islands. Hasta la vista

Thank you so much for having me you all make me feel so welcome. I love your house. My riding did improve I think!! I managed to jump and stay on. I cantered for ages but I admit trotting for long periods did wear me out. I love the three rides, all where different. I think I improved over the three days I have never ridden so much. The food was great, the horses were wonderful, the dogs were gorgeous and so were my two guides, a macho 40 yr old Gabriel and Javier the male model who was a delight to look at! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Reading List
Ecuador, A Travel Journal by Henri Michaux, Robin Magowan (Translator)
A brief, querulous and entirely wonderful account of travels in Ecuador with the poet Gangotena, strong on color and personality and thin on travel practicalities. First published in 1929, the unlikely modernist Belgian-French painter and poet in Quito includes an unbeatable description of the accursed weather among his many impressions. The translator, who also provides an introduction, called "Ecuador" the first modern travel book and its sketches, prose poems, diary fragments and ruminations are certainly closer to the surrealists than the Victorians.

Call of My Heart: The Journey to Ecuador and Beyond is not only the account of one woman's awakening in her quest to find the meaning of life. It is also the tender story of courage and openness.
