Sample Spain Riding Vacation Itinerary
Day 1
Meet in Barcelona (5pm) or Girona (6.30pm) and travel to Mas Alba (on some rides you stay at Bordils or other accommodation of equal standard). Mas Alba is a typical Catalan natural stone house dating from the 16th century. It overlooks peaceful forests, meadows and the horse pastures and is a beautiful spot to begin your Spain riding holiday.
Day 2
Ride out off from Mas Alba through oak and pine forests. The air may smell of the pines and then rosemary and thyme. You're riding through a beautiful, natural area. On the side of a 2000 year old Roman road, you are welcomed with Cava, Vino tino and catalan specialities in the “open air restaurante Buffalo”. Enjoy your tapas on the trail!
After lunch and a break, continue to ride along the banks of the river Ter. On this leg of your journey, you may have the opportunity for some nice canters. You are riding to Peratallada, one of the prettiest villages in Costa Brava. The old town wall embraces the lovely natural stone houses. Mosaic paving stones on the narrow streets show marks of horse carriages from the old days. This has been a long first day and you will be ready to relax in the comfortable accommodation and perhaps end the day with a stroll through the village.
Day 3
At the start of the riding day you pass another "pearl" of the Catalan coast — Palau Sator, a quaint old stone village. The ride then leads through rice fields to the stone houses and cobbled streets of the medieval village of Pals. The name Pals comes from the Latin word palus and means marsh land, as Pals was once surrounded by marshes and lakes.
You pass craftsmen and artists selling their goods and have lunch in a typical village restaurant (this is to your own account). Later ride through the sand dunes which are anchored by a Mediterranean pine forest - trotting and cantering on the soft sand to the bay of Pals. The rocks of the Islas Medes stick out of the water majestically. At the end of the day relax with a swim (or a paddle) in the Mediterranean sea. Overnight in the family run Hotel Picasso, (in February and March the Hotel Picasso is closed and you return to Peratallada by car to overnight).
Day 4
In the morning you ride up the mountains of Montgri Massif and are rewarded at the top of the cliffs with a magnificent view overlooking the endless sea. Seabirds glide on the thermals and the lovely fragrance of rosemary, thyme and lavender are in the air as you sit down to have a delicous saddle-bag picnic.
Later enjoy long canters as you cross the high plateau of the coastal mountains and continue through the silence of the continental sand dunes. In the bay of Roses you usually overnight in a hotel on the beach (but in cooler months, the overnight stay is usually in a beautiful 16th century mill).
Day 5
This morning you have an exciting ride along the beach. Please note that the speed on the beach depends on the rivers, weather, sea, sand and waves and the pace is always with the best interests of the group in mind. It isn’t always possible to gallop along the water’s edge.
After an adventurous beach ride you follow the River Fluvia inland until you reach the little paradise of a friend, Bogi, who owns a house beautifully situated by the river. The garden, which has a South American atmosphere, gives both horse and rider a romantic setting to end their day. The horses enjoy the big meadow next to the house. Please note that on this night you normally stay at Bogi’s, but sometimes we use another similar standard guesthouse.
[NB: In Spring or Autumn, you may do this wonderful beach ride at the end of Day 4. In the summer months and busy holiday times, you may need to be up early to ride onto the beach by 6am].
Day 6
Sunlight breaks through the deep green of a tropical, jungle like area. Bamboo narrows the paths and the atmosphere reminds us of Costa Rica. The trail leads you along a river, then winds through forests, meadows and pretty villages of natural stone, then its back to the horses’ base at Mas Alba, (but you may overnight in another guesthouse nearby). Relax by the pool with a cool drink and discuss the highlights of the week before having dinner together.
Day 7
After breakfast transfer to Barcelona or Girona or stay for another riding trail.
* This itinerary is a sample itinerary. Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.
Dali Beach and Coast Trail
Interested in riding through countryside and onto beaches that inspired great Spanish artists? The Dalí Beach and Coast Trail is a riding holiday along the Dali triangle–– the villages Pubol, Figueres and Cadaques. Visit the castle of Púbol, horse ride on mainly Andalusian and Spanish horses on beautiful beaches, visit the "Theatre Museu Dalí" in Figueres, horse ride the Cap de Creus nature reserve and to historic villages. This Spain riding vacation is for intermediate riders.

Sample Spain Riding Vacation Itinerary
Day 1
Meet Barcelona (5pm) or Girona (6.30pm) and transferred to the family-run horse riding farm Mas Alba. Mas Alba is a typical Catalan natural stone house dating from the 16th century. Since then, this wonderful farm has been run by the same family. From here you overlook green meadows, forests and horse pastures. The unique light transforms the surroundings into a picturesque painting. What a beautiful place to start your Dali Beach and Coast Trail.
Overnight at Mas Alba (or at another similar guesthouse nearby).
Day 2
A relaxed first days riding. From Mas Alba you enter into the magic of the Empordanet. From its rolling hills and soft countryside you can see century old villages in the distance. These magical villages were built of honey-colored stones and their narrow alleys, gardens and planted fields give you an idea of the strong inheritance of farming roots in the area. There will be a picnic stop near the river Ter and in the afternoon you can pick up the pace as you ride through Mediterranean woodland areas towards the village at the foot of the Gavarra hills. Here you stay in a Catalan guesthouse.
Day 3
Continue riding through the magical old villages of the Empordanet. With echoes of the horses' hooves on the old paving stones, you will be taken back in time in this hidden area of Catalonia. When you reach the village of Pubol you can visit the 14th Century castle of Gala, which Dali gave to his wife, Gala, as a gift. Here you tether the horses and have the chance to visit the castle before carrying on to your picnic lunch stop.
After stopping for lunch, continue riding to the beautiful village of Peratallada. Overnight in Peratallada.
Day 4
This morning you may trot and canter across the plain of Ullastred, which was a big lake in the Iberian times. A smooth trail leads you through mellow sand dunes and Mediterranean pine forests, up to the rough looking coastal mountain of Montgri.
You will ride onwards through the meadows and forest, stopping for an 'open air Restaurante Buffalo' lunch.
Later you follow paths that lead you through sand dunes to the sea. You stay overnight in a hotel directly at the "Playa Grande" (or another similar guesthouse nearby). This hotel provides basic old fashioned guesthouse accommodation.
Day 5
Awake to the sounds of the waves. Smell the coast, the wind and the salty air - you are right at the sea with your horses. You will want to enjoy the beach ride before the crowds and so its an early start so that you on the beach by 6am. (this early start isn't necessary if the weather is cooler and there are few people on the beach).
As the sun rises, you canter along the water's edge; your horses playing with the waves - they love the refreshing water.
Please note that the speed on the beach depends on the rivers, weather, sea, sand and waves and the pace is always with the best interests of the group in mind. It isn’t always possible to canter or gallop along the water’s edge.
In the afternoon you can go to Figueres and visit the theatre-museum of Dali. According to the painter, anyone who wants to be up to date with the latest culture must come to Figueres. Dali built his museum over the charred remains of the city's old main theatre and his idea was to convert it into a center of Western and European spirituality. Going shopping (or just window shopping) in the late afternoon was a common activity for Salvador Dali. After the visit to the museum you can enjoy the city too.
Day 6
Ride through sunflower and cornfields over the plains of the Alt Empordan. In long canters you cross the marshlands of Aiguamolls. This protected land is surrounded by the coastal mountain range of Rodas. At the foot of the mountain enjoy a picnic in the open air 'restaurante Buffalo'.
Afterwards you ride up the hills of Rodas into the Cap de Creus, where the last mountains of the Pyrenees descend into the sea.
Your accommodation tonight is usually at a typical Catalan farmhouse in Roses (on occasions an alternative guesthouse may be used of a similar standard).
Day 7
Horse ride along an old merchant path which winds its way through stony terrain, until you reach the home of Salvador Dali. Enjoy a picnic at the beach next to Dali's interesting home.
You will be transferred to your accommodation for your final night and farewell dinner.
This is usually at a guesthouse in the Bay of Port-Lligat. Here you may be given the choice of upgrading to a room with a sea view (this costs €25 per person and is payable locally). Please note on occasions an alternative hotel is used of a similar standard.
Day 8
After breakfast, transfer to Barcelona or Girona or on another trail.
* This itinerary is a sample itinerary. Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.

Sample Spain Riding Holiday in Catalonia
Day One
Meet in Barcelona (5pm) or Girona (6.30pm) and transferred to the camp ground in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. The camp is beautifully situated on a plateau with a fantastic view of the surrounding mountains and Mediterranean forests. The camp swimming pool is in the middle of an “Amphitheatre”. During your first dinner together you get to know your guide and chat about the riding week ahead.
Day Two
Today you discover the surrounding area and get to know your horses. You ride into the forest and along the rivers of the Alt Emporda Mountains, including the river Arnera which has crystal-clear waters and is teeming with trout. Enjoy a picnic and a siesta - only the sounds of the crickets and the splashing of the stream interrupt the peacefulness of the forest.
Day Three
Today your riding adventure leads you towards the Salinas Mountains. This is a lovely mountain range near Macanet de Cabrenys. You ride through the centre of the beautiful old village and may stop for a coffee. Afterwards you follow the paths into the forests and view the "Puig de les Salines". If you are in luck you may find some of the mushrooms that are famous in this area.
Day Four
Today you ride to the most beautiful natural pool in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Swim in its turquoise and crystal clear river water and relax with a picnic. Afterwards you continue to ride to Tapis, the last village before the French border.
Day Five
Vamos a la playa. Today you drive to the beach of the Gulf of Roses. You visit Roses which is a famous beach town with long sandy beaches situated on the Costa Brava. The old town has over 3000 years of history and there is the possibility to go souvenir shopping.
Later back in camp you have an exciting evening ride through the Mediterranean mountains and stop for a barbecue. What an adventure!
Day Six
Ride to the mountains. Up here at 1000 meters the vegetation changes. Pass a lonely chapel surrounded by fantastic views over the Garrotxa region and beyond to the Mediterranean. Inspired by the silence and refreshed by the mountain air you have a picnic and a siesta. Alternatively if it's too hot you may ride down to the edge of the lake Panta de Boadella for a cool swim.
Day Seven
Today you get to swim in the lake, but first you ride through a cork oak forest which gives out a silver, shimmering light. Then sandy ground invites you to have some lively canters. It's a dream come true - you can swim with the horses! After a picnic and a siesta ride around the lake back to camp.
Day Eight
After breakfast transfer to Barcelona or Girona or stay for another riding vacation in Spain.
* This itinerary is a sample itinerary. Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.

This Spain equestrian vacation is different depending on when you go:
In Spring: the soft green of the deciduous forests
In Summer: a comfortable climate on the high plateau
In Autumn: see the changing spectacular color of the leaves and enjoy an "Indian Summer"
In Winter: perhaps ride in the snow
The horse riding adventure "Trail of Bandits" is based on the biography of the famous "bandolero" Joan Sala Serrallonga, the Catalonian Robin Hood. In north-east Spain, the bandit Serrallonga wandered around the mountains of Guilleries and Garrotxa during the 17th century. The vast pathless area of woodland offered good hiding places to outlaws. Canyons, table mountains and volcanoes rise up in this wild landscape. Rivers, lakes and waterfalls provide pleasant refreshment. In the picturesque villages there are still stories told about the gangs of thieves and the Catalan rebels. Today we find an incredible riding paradise where outlaws once hid. The trail of bandits is an extremely diverse horse riding trek through massive canyons, table mountains and volcanoes.
Some of the best parts of this riding vacation include galloping on old bandit trails, a picnic at the base of the Table Mountain, the village of Tavertet, sunrise at the monastery "El Far", and staying at a secluded horse farm.
If you have a fear of heights, this is not the riding vacation for you. At points on the riding holiday, you need to lead your horse on foot. There are places where the ground can be rocky and uneven and most of the time it will be downhill. On the Bandit Trail you normally need to get off and lead on three days. Each stretch is for about 30 minutes, although on day three you get off and lead twice.
* Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.
Fresh & Saltwater Trail
This challenging riding vacation takes you along rivers and lakes and to the Mediterranean Sea. For many travelers, the best part of it is swimming with your horse, an opportunity that can sometimes arise daily on this riding holiday! Many riders also enjoy faster riding through the lowlands of the river Fluvia. Other diverse scenery for horse riding includes shaded oak forests, views of the mountains and pristine streams. You should be an experienced rider and prepared for 4 to 7 hours in the saddle each day. The total distance ridden is approximately 125 miles.

Sample Spain Riding Holiday Itinerary
On occasion, the below itinerary may run in reverse.
Please note that it is necessary to lead your horse on foot on some sections of the trail. Sometimes the ground can be rocky and uneven and most of the time it will be downhill. On the Fresh & Saltwater Trail you normally need to get off and lead on three days. Each stretch is for about 40 minutes, although on day four you get off and lead twice.
Day One
Meet in in Barcelona (5pm) or Girona (6.30pm) and transferred your accommodation. Usually you stay at La Palma, a country hotel with a large pool situated beautifully at the riverside. However on occasion you may stay at an alternative guesthouse of a similar standard. Dinner and overnight.
Day Two
You are transferred in the morning to the horse riding farm Mas Alba to meet the horses. From Mas Alba you ride through deep stone oak and pine forests on secluded paths. Unexpectedly, you find your first picnic next to the river Fluvia. In the afternoon you will follow the river and enjoy some nice leisurely canters.
Day Three
Setting off from your accommodation you ride through the foot hills of the Pyrenees. Here you enter deep into a mixed forest providing shade. At the mountain stream you discover a big pool, where you have a picnic and a chance for a first swim.
Afterwards your Spanish horse climbs safely and diligently over a pass with a fantastic panoramic view of the high peaks of the Pyrenees. Stay overnight close to a beautiful mountain village near the River Muga.
Day Four
Deeper and deeper you ride into the nature reserve of Garrotxa. You stop in front of some impressive looking lime rocks.
Later descend to the most beautiful natural pool in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Enjoy a swim in the turquoise and crystal clear river water and then a picnic.
On the high paths there are beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. Here you will need to dismount and lead your horse into a new vegetation zone of chestnut and cork oak forests. In the middle of the Pyrenees you stay overnight in the pretty wooden houses of Can Roquet, (or at an alternative accommodation nearby).
Day Five
Today the aim is to swim in the lake. Ride through a cork oak forest which gives out a silver, shimmering light. The sandy ground invites you to pick up a fast canter and soon you reach the lake. It's a dream come true - you can go for a swim with the horses!
After a picnic and a siesta you ride around the lake until you come to your comfortable accommodation. Only the sounds of the crickets and the splashing of the stream interrupt the peace of the forest.
Day Six
An early start and a long mornings ride ahead. You set off through a soft hilly landscape of forests and meadows. The sweet smelling pine forest and the reddish soil might remind you of Arizona.
In front of you the plateau of the Alt Emporda opens. It is a faster ride to the Albera Mountains nature reserve where you find the "Gorga negra", a dark pool with lovely cool water. Enjoy a swim and a picnic.
Afterwards ride through countryside with large round stones, which resembles Africa, and arrive at the village Espolla where you stay overnight.
Day Seven
Ancient olive trees and vineyards dominate the countryside this morning as you approach the coastal mountains of Rodas. The light in this wild and fascinating countryside is amazing.
Enjoy superb views towards the Pyrenean peaks and onto the deep blue of the Mediterranean.
The Andalusian horses manage the mountains easily and in the afternoon, descend to the picturesque fishermen's bay. You have now reached salt water and may have a swim in the sea.
Day Eight
After breakfast transfer to Barcelona or Girona or stay for another riding trail.
* This itinerary is a sample itinerary. Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.
Herdsmen’s Trail
Exciting horse riding vacation that takes you from the Mediterranean Costa Brava area to the alpine mountains of the Pyrenees. This is a challenging riding holiday in an area where herdsmen still pass along the so called "Camino Real" through the north eastern part of Catalonia. In winter the herds stay in the mild coastal areas and in summer they make their way up towards the Pyrenees. Riders who take this riding holiday need to be experienced. You'll ride for 4 to 7 hours a day for a total of 125 miles.

Spain Riding Vacation Sample Itinerary
Please note that it is necessary to lead your horse on foot on some sections of the trail. Sometimes the ground can be rocky and uneven and most of the time it will be downhill. On the Herdsmen's Trail you will need to get off and lead your horse each day (except normally not the first riding day) for up to 50 minutes at a time. On days five and six there are three different sections where you get off and lead.
Day One
Meet in Barcelona (5pm) or Girona (6.30pm) and transferred to the horse base, Mas Alba. This is a typical Catalan farmhouse where you stay overnight with views of the surrounding horse meadows and forests. The unique light transforms the surroundings into a picturesque painting. What a great place to start your exciting horse riding adventure into the Pyrenees Mountains.
Please note that the usual accommodation is at Mas Alba, but on occasion you may stay in a nearby guesthouse.
Day Two
After meeting your horses you set off through the foothills of the Pyrenees and follow the river Fluvia in the direction of the mountains - a route taken by old herdsmen like Juan the Shepherd.
The pretty villages of the Alt Empordan are impressive witnesses of an amazing past. In a glade near the river, the friendly "Catalan Buffalo" meets you with a glass of Cava and a beautifully set table. After a siesta you can set a fast pace on the soft loamy paths. When you have finished riding you will be taken to your comfortable accommodation.
Day Three
You ride on to the wild hilly countryside of Garrotxa, passing through the medieval town of Besalu and crossing the romantic Llierca bridge. This is a long mornings ride.
You may find some sparkling turquoise rock pools suitable for a refreshing swim.
The agile and fit Andalusian horses will carry you safely over the Santa Barbara pass. From the top you have fantastic views of the bizarre rock formations. Your destination is a small mountain village where you stay overnight.
Day Four
Today you will have a shorter and more relaxed mornings ride. The Llierca valley with its strong lime rocks lies in front of you. Only the clattering of the hooves, the splashing of a stream and the calm sounds of the cow bells interrupts the deep quietness of this secluded area. You should see spectacular birds of prey, reptiles and butterflies and with a bit of luck maybe even a wild pig or a badger.
Depending on the weather, you stop for your picnic under a two thousand year old oak tree or the turquoise water of the streams invites you for a refreshing dip. Later, reach the picturesque mountain village of Beget, where you stay the night.
Day Five
Your ride deeper into the Pyrenees on an ancient medieval merchant's path which takes further into the mountains. Beech, oak and chestnut forests cover the hills and beyond the forests are the alpine meadows (the endless realm of the herdsmen) where Buffalo prepares a picnic on the riverside. The view of the surrounding 9000 feet high mountains is tremendous. You ride through the little mountain village of Mollo with its romantic church and later arrive at your destination, the mountain village of Espinavell, at the foot of the magnificent mountain Costa Bona.
Day Six
It's an early start to ascend to the high regions of the Pyrenees. The horses carry you over the immense cattle fields where you meet cows, sheep, goats and the occasional wild Pyrenean horse. These high regions have an alpine character, with narcissi, iris, gentian and alpine roses transforming the meadows into carpets of flowers.
When you reach the high plateau of the Costa Bona (7000 feet) you are rewarded with a magnificent view. To the west you can see the highest peak of Catalonia and to the east the Mediterranean glistens a deep blue.
Enjoy a picnic and siesta and maybe observe a vulture family rising into the sky on the thermals. Then later ride on secluded paths through this wonderful mountain paradise down to the small town of Camprodon. Today is a long days riding.
Day Seven
The horses’ hooves make quite a noise as you ride through a mountain village. You now follow the mountain stream of Ter and ride through a glowing beech forest before arriving at the endless rolling mountain meadows of the high Pyrenees. Up here you ride with breathtaking views over the snow capped mountains. After a delicious picnic you continue along forest tracks that bring you to the edge of the valley. Your final destination of this unforgettable trail is St. Joan de Abadeses, near another charming mountain village with its Roman bridge and a magnificent monastery.
Your horses tonight will enjoy a lovely rest in a big meadow, well deserved for sure.
Day Eight
After breakfast those who must leave will transfer to Barcelona or Girona. Some fortunate people will stay on to join the Bandolero Serrallonga trail (Bandit Trail) riding through canyons, table mountains and volcanoes and take the horses back to the horse base.
This itinerary is a sample itinerary. Itineraries are subject to changes due to the weather, the trip guide's discretion and other factors.

Literature
The Sun Also Rises (Paperback) by Ernest Hemingway
Equitrekking Host Darley Newman’s Pick: “Travel through 1920’s Paris and Spain with Hemingway’s quirky cast of ex-pats as they feast on decadent food and wine, take on nightlife in Paris, fish in Basque country and witness the running of the bulls in Pamplona. Though it was written decades ago, Hemingway’s story and descriptions of life in Spain still resonate today. I recently reread this book. I remember enjoying it when it was required reading in high school, but enjoyed it even more after traveling to Spain myself as an adult.”
Amazon.com Review- The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation.
Spain in Mind (Paperback) edited by Alice Leccese Powers

Here are letters and memoirs from Lord Byron, Edith Wharton, and Henry James; a poem about Picasso by E. E. Cummings; and a comic tale by Anthony Trollope in which two Englishmen mistake a Spanish duke for a bullfighter. W. H. Auden, George Orwell, and Langston Hughes record their experiences in the Spanish Civil War, Ernest Hemingway takes on bullfighting, Richard Wright is beguiled by gypsy flamenco dancers, and Calvin Trillin pursues an obsession with Spanish peppers. From Chris Stewart’s memoir of his rural retreat in Driving Over Lemons to Barbara Kingsolver’s idyllic portrait of the Canary Islands in “Where the Map Stopped,” the glimpses of another world in Spain in Mind will enchant you
Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell
Orwell's portrait of the Barcelona uprising and the spirit of a city at war is a classic, an observant and heartfelt report from the streets. In part, this book is the simply told story of a wide-eyed soldier caught up in revolutionary fervor and the allure of Spain.
