Set in the Alta Garrotxa region deep in the heart of Catalonia, the farmhouse is close the French border, the Mediterranean coast and Barcelona, ideally positioned between the mountains and the sea, enabling visitors to explore the many changing faces of the Catalonian landscape. This Spain equestrian vacation has been welcoming guests since 1984.
Choose from a variety of eight day inn to inn or stationary riding vacations through the mountains and along the stunning coast, passing through medieval villages and by castles and monasteries. On inn to inn progressive riding vacations, you'll stay in charming rural inns and hotels, including spa hotels.
Horseback ride along a historic smuggling trail between France and Spain, passing Catalonia's lively market towns, beech forests and meadows carpeted in wild flowers. Horse ride through country that inspired many paintings by Salvador Dali, enjoying the Mediterranean Pyrenean wilderness, the Alvera wine growing region, and beautiful beaches and more.
Riding Level
Equestrians should be reasonably competent in the saddle. You should be well balanced, comfortable and secure and able to control a well-schooled horse outside at all paces for these horse riding holidays in Spain. Riders are expected to be able to cope with a variety of different paces and types of terrain. All the rides are aimed at fairly fit riders who ride regularly, and participants are expected to ride regularly in the months before they go to ensure they can cope with the hours in the saddle.
There are places on the rides where you will need to dismount and lead your horse for a short way - if the ground gets rough or steep, and for a short time to warm the horses up and cool them down each day. Riders are expected to groom and tack up their own horse each day in preparation for rides.
Packing
- Helmets availabe on site for you to borrow
- Travelers can get laundry service at the farmhouse when necessary. On progressive rides, this may not be available during the riding week.
- Jodhpurs, as these protect your legs from soreness, and you will find a light-weight, cotton pair, more comfortable during the summer months. You may need two pairs if you are on one of the longer rides.
- Your riding boots should have a sole with tread and be comfortable for walking, as you are certain to lead your horse on some occasions. Jodhpur boots and half-chaps are a more flexible combination for comfort and leg protection than long riding boots.
- A long-sleeved shirt is recommended for protection against the sun and against scratches when riding through undergrowth.
- Lightweight riding gloves are useful, as is a fanny pack to carry your camera and any other items you may need during your ride.
- This outfitter strongly recommends taking a water-bottle, especially on trail-rides, that can be refilled en-route; these can be carried in the saddle-bags provided.
- A light cotton scarf can help to avoid breathing in too much dust in dry areas.
- Bring sunglasses-- also to protect your eyes from dust.
- Sun screen and lip balm are also recommended.
- It is essential that you bring good wet weather gear. Although it rains very little, when it does it is normally a heavy downpour, consequently a jacket or cape and waterproof trousers are a good idea.
- Last, but not least: do not forget your bathing suit!
About the Horses
The horses used for rides are well schooled pure or crossbred Andalusian. They have all been carefully chosen and most are between 14.2hh and 16hh and are of a medium build. They are sure footed, fit, forward going, responsive to ride and well adapted to the requirements of the sometimes rough terrain.
The horses are all trained using natural horsemanship techniques ,which helps to create an enthusiastic, good natured horse that is keen to collaborate with its rider, and really enjoys its work.
Tack is English style and most horses are ridden in snaffles. There are English saddles and trekking saddles. Saddle bags are provided to carry items required during the day and for picnic lunches.
Activities/Events

The riding center is based in the stables next to the Inn. There are around 40 Andalusian horses on the property for all levels from beginners to experienced riders. Guests may ride out when and for as long as they like with a guide.

Sample Itinerary
Day 1 Arrive
In the evening upon your arrival in the town of Sant Jaume de Llierca, you will be driven up a winding track to the 11th century farmhouse perched high up on a ridge overlooking the Pyrenees.
Here you will meet your hosts. At dinner, learn about the week’s itinerary. You will be told about the special characteristics of our Andalusian trail horses. After dinner, you will be given an introduction to the weeks program with an opportunity for a one to one conversation designed to find every rider their horse for the week.
Finally, discover how to play the ‘Champagne rules’ which is anyone found guilty of holding up the ride at any point having to buy a bottle of local cava (Spanish champagne) for the group that evening, making for lively dinners!
Day 2 River Swim
Having tacked up, set off down into the valley of the river Fluvia, Girona´s largest river, and follow a gushing stream. Canter across the plains and into the spectacular gorge of Sant Aniol. This is the beginning of a historic smuggling trail between France and Spain. Stop for our picnic underneath an impressive Romanesque bridge next to a big river pool, excellent for a refreshing swim before lunch.
This spectacular scenery is the gateway to the region of the Alta Garrotxa, one of the regions most beautiful natural parks. High up in the mountains surrounded by huge oaks, stable the horses and return to the farmhouse for a delicious dinner and a well earned rest.
Day 3 Beget Mountain Village
In the morning, leave the gorge with its sculptured rock formations and ascend higher into the mountains. Ride through Talaxa, a typical mountain village with an impressive Romanesque church.
From here, enjoy spectacular views of "La Costa Bona", your destination for this horse journey. After a walk down into the next valley, eat a delicious picnic next to a little river. This is an ideal spot to swim with your horse.
In the evening, arrive at Beget, a beautiful mountain village, nestled amidst the gentle mountain scenery. This village maintains all of its original charm, famous for its Romanesque church, original tower and its Black Madonna, a gem of Romanesque architecture.
Your hotel for the night is El Forn, which was the village bakery and now is a well known restaurant in the region, famous for the local Catalan dishes and the local mountain wine.
Day 4 Ride High
Today after a wonderful breakfast, continue your journey riding through beech forests and meadows carpeted in wild flowers. The local farmhouses are huge constructions built by the local aristocracy and wealthy Barcelona merchants in the 16th century. Again, Catalonia's Romanesque architecture is ever present in the arches, doors, windows and churches of this region, making for wonderful photography.
Your destination is the village of Espinavell, another small smugglers village untouched by the passing of time, just 5 kilometres from the French border. Stay in a family run mountain hotel with the beautiful presence of "La Costa Bona" in the background.
The speciality of this restaurant is its delicious Jamon Serrano and Ratafia, the homemade local liquor.
Day 5 Eagles and Market Towns
Today you will be riding up into the highest mountains of your journey. After an early start, begin to climb a winding track alongside a river. Soon leave the track, as up here it is only rolling mountain meadows and wild flowers where you can enjoy some very nice canters and gallops.
The views are immense and breathtaking and the light is that of the Pyrenees. Pass herds of cows and horses grazing for the summer. It is common to see eagles, vultures and herds of wild goats and deer.
After days of riding in the countryside, it is nice to arrive in Camprodon, a lively market town, favoured by the Catalan aristocracy in the past. This is a great opportunity to do some shopping and visit the local bars. The hotel is situated right in the centre and the restaurant is famous for its meat and fish dishes. You may try the best paella you have ever eaten, a wonderful mixture of mountains and sea, meat and fish together, in this town.
Day 6 Medieval Oix
The journey continues… you sadly leave Camprodon with its lovely squares and art nouveau buildings. Following a river, pass by the local textile factories, that have seen former days of glory and up onto the ridges. Here, ride onto spectacular mountain plateaus, where the views are immense and the terrain is good for galloping. On a good day you can see kilometres of coast and in the evening, you will arrive in the village of Oix, another charming mountain village with a magnificent castle, narrow winding streets and lovely cafes.
Settle the horses for a well deserved rest after a long and rewarding day. Travel by car back to the farmhouse for another delicious diner.
Day 7 Andalusian Stamina
The peaks of the Alta Garrotxa are all around you. The air is poignant with the smell of wild herbs and Mediterranean fragrances. In the far distance, you can make out the farmhouse, your final destination of this journey.
Today the riding is lively. The strong Andalusian horses are still full of stamina. The gallops are long and steady as we ride out across the plains, dotted with small local villages, leaving the Pyrenees behind you.
Today you will be happy to see the farmhouse, your base, again after 6 days of adventure and excellent riding and good company. Enjoy a delicious farewell diner and toast your faithful horses and new found friends and say ¨hasta la proxima¨

At dinner we will go over the week’s program, you will be told about the special characteristics of our Andalucian trail horses. After dinner you will be given an introduction to the weeks programme with an opportunity for a one to one conversation designed to find every rider their perfect horse.

Monday, Day 2: Start of the Trek
Today after saddling the horses we are ready to leave, 200 km ahead. The horses are fresh and ready for the adventure. During the morning we ride through the valleys of La Miana and we pass the spectacular church of Sant Frutós. We are leaving the mountains. When we get to the river Fluvia, one of Catalonia’s biggest rivers, we travel along the south bank of the river Fluvia, where we stop for a picnic.
We continue through scenery of rolling hills and pine forests where it is very likely to meet herds of sheep or wild boar. At dusk we arrive at our destination, the charming village of Vilert, where we leave our horses to graze and rest. Our destination for tonight is Hostal Nou de Crespia, where Elena and Juan are the perfect hosts. The house dates back to the seventeenth century and has been carefully restored. The swimming pool and the living room are all at our disposal. In the restaurant they serve a traditional cuisine based on the finest local ingredients and on some old family recipes.
Tuesday, Day 3: Catalan Architecture
In the morning we leave from Vilert into the forest and over the rolling hills around the village of Ollers, with its church dominating the area. Here you find some majestic farm houses built by the nobility in the 12th century.
With amazing views on the Pyrenees behind us, we enter the historic village of Galliners with some fine examples of Catalan architecture. We travel through forests full of aromatic herbs and wild flowers and we stop for an excellent lunch surrounded by Rosemary bushes.
After lunch we continue our journey into the Alt Empordan region and after some good canters we hit the town of Bascara, alongside the river Fluvia. We walk into the fortified centre, with its castle, and stop in one of the traditional bars for a carajillo or a glass of local fino. Back on our horses for the last part of today, a gentle ride following the river and into the village of Calabuig where we can see the 15th century Castle/church, build on a hill overlooking the Alt Empurdan 360º around us.
Our destination for today is Can Sort, an old traditional Catalan country farmhouse which has been renovated and decorated with antique furniture. Here you can relax in the gardens or have a swim in the swimming pool. Jaime and Cristina will make sure that we feel at home and serve us an excellent home cooked meal.
Wednesday, Day 4: Roman History
Today the scenery and pace is varied. Every hour we pass another beautiful village, castles, churches, chapels, arches, old wooden doors with wrought iron knockers, the beauty of the stonework of the past. We will stop for a drink in a bar in the middle of the pine forest where we can listen to the singing of the crickets.
We ride along with excellent views where it is not unusual to disturb a resting eagle and to be able to watch it soar gracefully above us. We ride through the coastal mountains, with views all around us, and act in the footsteps of the Romans, following a part of the Roman road from Gerona to the important Roman settlement on the coast (Sant Marti d´Empuries) and further into France.
We enjoy our lunch near a natural well, a welcome refreshment for us and the horses. After a siesta we saddle the horses and go coastal bound.
Out of nowhere we suddenly see the magnificent castle Sant Feliu de la Garriga, a 12th century fortified castle with a Romanesque church. From here we have spectacular views on the coast and we see our beach for tomorrows ride. Our destination of today is our hotel in L´Escala, a lively town situated at the coast. Walk around the old town or plunge into the sea before dinner.
Thursday, Day 5: The Beach and Dali Theatre Museum
Today we make an early start. The long curve of the bay of Rosas stretches before us. Kilometres of sand and surf, not a soul, the splash of the waves, the Mediterranean sunrise, the dull thud of the hoofs on the sand, the horses love to cool their legs in the sea. Here we enjoy some excellent canters and gallops. What an experience!
After the beach ride we head inland again through the natural Parc Aiguamols, a bird sanctuary where we can see flocks of migrating birds. We stop in the lively fishing village Sant Pere de Pescador for a coffee and some sightseeing.
Heading for Castellon d´Empurias, the terrain is flat with lots of pears and apple orchards and also huge rice fields. The pace today is lively. By lunchtime we arrive at our destination Castellon d´Empurias. In ancient times this was the capital of the region, a lively town dominated by its spectacular cathedral.
Our hotel, in the historic centre, has an outdoor swimming pool where you can relax on one of the sun beds on the lovely patio or you can do some shopping, enjoy some excellent tapas with cold drinks at one of the nice terraces and explore the local nightlife. Or you can go to Figueres to visit the famous Dali-museum and amaze yourself with his art.
Friday, Day 6: Miles into the Alt Emporda
After an excellent breakfast on the magnificent roof-top terrace of the hotel over-looking the cathedral with the Mediterranean on one side and the gentle curve of the Pyrenees on the other, we saddle up again to continue our journey through the Alt Emporda.
Today we have miles ahead of us. We ride through the village of Riumors and gallop over the planes surrounded by fields with different crops.
Around lunch time we will find an excellent spot in the beautiful wild forest for our picnic.
With an amazing view on the Pyrenees in the distance, we ride through walnut and olive groves before we go down to the river Fluvia where you can see the immediate change in scenery. All year around its lush and almost looks like the Amazon jungle.
Return to the farmhouse for the night.
Saturday, Day 7: Visit Medieval Besalu
Sadly we have to leave our lovely hotel and say goodbye to our hosts. We start of with a refreshing gallop and we ride through sunflower fields and walnut groves to the picturesque village of Crespia. We follow the north bank of the river Fluvia where we can enjoy the spectacular fluvial scenery with lots of different bird species. We cover many miles in a short time through sunflower fields, open meadows and forest.
We stop in Besalu where we have a delicious picnic lunch by the river. Besalu, a medieval walled village, the ancient capital, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture set between two rivers. The squares, stone cut pillars and cool shady arched passageways are a wonder to behold. Not to mention the stained glass of its churches. You have some time to wander around and absorb the unique atmosphere of this ancient medieval village with its spectacular bridge and Romanesque architecture.
In the afternoon we ride through the scented oak forests above beautiful ravines that so characterise this mountainous region known as the Garrotxa. The views are superb with the Pyrenees in the distance to the north and the Mediterranean coast to the south. After some long canters we see our base a welcome sight as we arrive in the afternoon.
A glass, or two, of Cava on the terrace overlooking the mountains followed by a delicious meal is a perfect end to a marvellous journey.

About Horsemanship
Wouldn’t it be great to gain the perfect partnership with your horse? One that’s based on trust, respect and understanding?
Learn the subtle language of horses through feel, intuition, balance and timing. We will help you to develop, explore and understand deeper communication. Offer knowledge and give guidance in mastering the horses natural language to enrich your relationships with horses.
Partnership
There are no better teachers of horsemanship than the horses themselves and besides the 45 resident horses at this Spanish farm, you have Adam Shereston and Danielle Visarius. They are the main trainers. Between them, they have a wealth of knowledge and understand what it takes to achieve a harmonious relationship with horses. Their intention is to teach people how to better understand horses by improving knowledge of behavior and developing an understanding of the true nature of the equine species.
“We work from a feel based approach, focusing on the horses mind and natural instinct. The aim is to influence and release maneuvers instead of forcing them. This aids us in developing empathy and understanding and produces a dedicated partner”.
Groundwork
The foundation starts on the ground. It is a good way to be introduced to their language, learn to read what the horse is telling you and become aware of the subtle signals they give. It is an opportunity to understand the importance of body language and what effect this has on the horse. We will help you bring out natural leadership skills, show you how to lead and direct the horse from different positions confidently and safely without the use of pressure. In short: How to build a willing partnership!
Riding
Once a good foundation is established, we move on to the saddle where the groundwork will be translated to the ridden work. In the saddle we will make you aware of how it feels to move in time with the horse, following his natural movements and how you can influence these movements. In other words; you will learn how to ride horses with feel.
Whether you have a lifetime of experience with horses or are starting out on your horsemanship, a trip to this Spanish farm offers excitement, education and above all fun whilst learning.
The trainers: Adam Shereston & Danielle Visarius
Adam Shereston - Internationally Renowned Horse Whisperer
Many refer to Adam as a Horse Whisperer because, through his heightened sensitivity. This ability has enabled him to develop an original approach to the way in which we interact with horses. Adam's work ethic with horses is to have good feel, intuition, balance and timing to create a partnership based on trust, respect and understanding. His work has featured on television throughout Europe and he has appeared in International newspapers and magazines. Whether you are a happy hacker or serious competition rider his principles will apply to all and can help you gain a better relationship and far better results.

Danielle Visarius – Dutch Horsemanship Trainer
Danielle has been around horses since she was a child. Starting on a horse farm without the guidance of instructors gave her the opportunity to learn from them directly. She rode out bitless and bare back, forming relationships with the horses based on trust and respect. Following this she stepped into the world of dressage and trained for competition. She experienced with her mare that this didn't lead to the desired partnership, so she decided to search for other ways. This path led her through many different countries and methods of Natural Horsemanship. She followed numerous courses and internships with horsemanship trainers from all over the world. Adam Shereston was one of her main inspirations and helped to guide her back to re-discovering her own abilities and feel.
In her work with horses she uses communication through body language, feel and timing. Her focus is to create a good relationship and build a solid foundation. She combines this with the horses physical training to empower its natural movements and strength. Her aim is to bring both horse and rider mentally and physically in balance.

Day 2 Sant Ferriol, The Name of the Rose
Today the pace is varied. You will enjoy the canters and the pretty mountain tracks. Today’s destination is a beautiful monastery from the 16th century, a jewel of Romanesque architecture built by Cistercian monks, that conjures up scenes and the spirit of the book "The Name of the Rose”. From here, enjoy panoramic views over the Ampurdan region out to the Mediterranean coast. After a delicious picnic lunch, enjoy a pleasant horse ride along the ridge and back to the farmhouse.
Day 3 Sadernas Gorge
Horse ride through the picturesque villages of Argelaguer and Tortella with a magnificent church dominating the village square. Now the landscape is large with open stretches and you can enjoy some more long canters and gallops to Sadernas. This is the entrance to a rocky gorge that leads high up into the Pyrenees, the beginning of one of the most famous smuggling routes between Spain and France, an area famous for its bandit stories. Amidst this dramatic mountain scenery, there is an immense Romanesque bridge over a large river pool. This is perfect for a refreshing swim before the picnic lunch.
Day 4: Girona, Tapas and Wine
Today, ride along the ridge of the Santa Magdalena chapel with its medieval watch tower overlooking the Llierca valley. Horse ride through some very interesting forests with excellent views where it is not unusual to disturb a resting eagle and to be able to watch it soar gracefully beneath you in the valley.
Then, arrive back to the farmhouse for a late Spanish lunch, a delicious paella. After lunch you will be driven down to visit Girona. The capital of the region, this little city has wonderful shady streets, beautiful architecture, the widest cathedral in Europe and great shopping. Or you can take it easy and relax by the pool.
Tonight you are going to discover the typical Spanish tapas. But what will tapas be without some good wine? Taste some of the most special local wines with this delicious food- guaranteed a memorable night!
Day 5 & 6 The Two-Day Trail Ride
This is a circular ride that covers over 60kms in two days. During the morning, ride through the valleys of La Miana and pass the spectacular church of Sant Frutós. You are leaving the mountains.
When you get to the Fluvia River, one of Catalonia’s biggest rivers, travel along the south bank and stop for a picnic. Continue through scenery of rolling hills and pine forests where it is very likely to meet herds of sheep or wild boar. At dusk, arrive to your destination, the charming village of Vilert, where you leave the horses to graze and rest. You will be driven back to the farmhouse for a welcome meal with popular house wine.
The next day ride through walnut groves to the lovely village of Crespia. Follow the north bank of the river, where you can enjoy the spectacular scenery with lots of different bird species. Cover many miles in a short time through sunflower fields, open meadows and forest.
Stop in Besalu where you'll have a delicious picnic lunch by the river. Besalu, the ancient capital, is a jewel of Romanesque architecture set between two rivers. The squares, stone cut pillars and cool shady arched passageways are a wonder to behold, as is the stained glass of its churches. You have some time to wander around and absorb the unique atmosphere of this ancient medieval village with its spectacular bridge and Romanesque architecture.
In the afternoon, ride through the scented oak forests above beautiful ravines that so characterise this mountainous region known as the Garrotxa. The views are superb with the Pyrenees in the distance to the north and the Meditranean coast to the south. After some long canters, you'll see the farmhouse, a welcome sight as you arrive in the late afternoon. A glass or two of Cava, Spanish champagne, on the terrace overlooking the mountains followed by a delicious meal is a perfect end to a marvellous journey.
Day 7 Coguleras, the Hidden Valley
Horse ride quietly down through a forest alongside a mountain stream to the flood plains by the little village of Sant Jaume de Llierca where you may have coffee or a sherry in the local bar. Here there are some majestic farmhouses built by the nobility in the 12th century.
Today you will really appreciate the strength, agility and stamina of your horse in this varied terrain. They climb like mountain goats, and fly across the the flood plains like gazelles. For lunch, climb up to the ridge of Sant Julia. Here, eat a delicious picnic in a meadow beneath a shady tree, before riding home to the farmhouse.

Traveler Reviews
Just returned from taking the Catalonia Discovery ride. What a fantastic adventure. Great scenery, super food, expert guide (Anne Marie), and wonderful horses. This ride really stretched me, but I never felt overmounted or afraid. Most days I felt I was riding in a Van Gogh painting... gallops through fields of sunflowers & orchards, past newly mown hay. The sights and smells will stay with me a long time. And I will be back with stable buddies.

Just home from my third visit. Another briliant holiday. Whether you're travelling alone or with others you will receive a warm welcome, lovely accommodation in the most beautiful setting. Excellent food and plenty of wine, but most importantly of all, the most amazing horses. Thanks to Luis our guide for a thoroughly enjoyable trail and to Marcos and Julian for a wonderful stay. Looking forward to returning again.

I had very high expectations before arriving and I can say without exaggerating that I got everything I hoped for and much more. This trip I can warmly recommend. It´s now been a couple of days since I left Can Jou and my mind is still there... The atmosphere, the pace, the great food, the good wine, the wonderful people and not least the lovely horses are all things I loved and now miss.

The "Mountains to the Sea trail" in May 2010 was absotlutely brilliant - again! I got so many beautiful impressions of the countryside and the area, the team was really kind and helpful and the horses amazing. Thank you so much to Louis our guide, who did his job very well! I am looking forward to next time!

Excellent, excellent ride! From the powerful horses, to the expert guidance of Anna Marie, to the fantastic variety of trails and rides, I cannot use enough exclamation points. Really, really good food and fun picnics with siestas especially made me feel I was "away". Lovely gallops through orchards and mountains will stay with me a long, long time. The Sun Also Rises (Paperback) by Ernest Hemingway
Equitrekking Host Darley Newman’s Pick: “Travel through 1920’s Paris and Spain with Hemingway’s quirky cast of ex-pats as they feast on decadent food and wine, take on nightlife in Paris, fish in Basque country and witness the running of the bulls in Pamplona. Though it was written decades ago, Hemingway’s story and descriptions of life in Spain still resonate today. I recently reread this book. I remember enjoying it when it was required reading in high school, but enjoyed it even more after traveling to Spain myself as an adult.”
Amazon.com Review- The Sun Also Rises is Hemingway's masterpiece--one of them, anyway--and no matter how many times you've read it or how you feel about the manners and morals of the characters, you won't be able to resist its spell. This is a classic that really does live up to its reputation.

From Chris Stewart’s memoir of his rural retreat in Driving Over Lemons to Barbara Kingsolver’s idyllic portrait of the Canary Islands in “Where the Map Stopped,” the glimpses of another world in Spain in Mind will enchant you
